About OBD-II Codes

OBD-II (On-Board Diagnostics II) has been standard on all US vehicles since 1996. When the ECU detects a fault, it stores a Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) and illuminates the Check Engine Light.

P codes = Powertrain (engine, transmission). B codes = Body (airbags, HVAC). C codes = Chassis (ABS, suspension). U codes = Network (module communication).

P0xxx and P2xxx are SAE standard codes (same meaning on every make). P1xxx, B1xxx, C1xxx are manufacturer-specific and vary by brand.

Always address the root cause before clearing codes — a code will return if the underlying problem isn't fixed.
